ORC NORTH DALLAS

As the foreign-born population has grown, so has the population of their children. Immigrant-origin children have become the fastest growing segment of the national child population. Thirty percent of young adults between the ages of 18 and 34 are first- or second-generation immigrants, and by 2020, one in three children below the age of 18 will be the child of an immigrant.

Because social service organizations are, and increasingly will be, serving immigrant adults and their children in a variety of settings, including schools, community centers, clinics, and hospitals, they need to be aware of the complex transformation in demographics and consider its implications.  ORC centers attention on providing psychological services to immigrant individuals and families and educational services to various and different community groups to help them understand the shifting demographics of American society and the new immigrant communities.

ORC services include individual counseling sessions with children, which is a service that focuses on current and past problems, experiences, feelings of the children, and behavioral problems.  During counseling sessions children are empowered to understand more about their problems and their social environment.  The objective of counseling services is expected to increase the capacity, knowledge and skill of the children; and will also teach them how to deal with difficulties and problems they might be facing in the future.  The psycho-social counseling service enables children to manage different situations and circumstances, adopt coping strategies, and develop problem solving skills.

Play Therapy

Play therapy is to children what counseling is to adults. Play therapy utilizes play, children's natural medium of expression, to help them express their feelings more easily through toys instead of words (UNT.)

Association for Play Therapy (APT) defines play therapy as "the systematic use of a theoretical model to establish an interpersonal process wherein trained play therapists use the therapeutic powers of play to help clients prevent or resolve psychosocial difficulties and achieve optimal growth and development."

Parenting Skill Training

The ORC conducts mothers and children counseling group sessions with the goal of enhancing the mother child relationship, and empowering them to work together to address and cope with domestic violence issues. This aspect of ORC’s psycho-social counseling service enables mothers and children to work together to manage different situations and circumstances, adopting coping strategies and problem solving skills.
